IPTV touching 10 million mark worldwide
IPTV
is approaching the 60 million subscriber magic figure mark, according to a report from the Telecommunications Management Group, Inc. (TMG). The study forecasts that the killer broadband application IPTV (News - Alert) will increase its worldwide subscribers to nearly 60 million by the end of 2010.
The Internet Protocol Television provides video services over managed IP
networks to consumers’ televisions. From its commencement in the year 2002 IPTV has been doubling its customers annually.
This has been firmly established from the fact that the number of customers reached 9.9 million IPTV subscribers worldwide at the end of 2007. That is double the number from the previous year. TMG projects more than a 500 percent increase over the next three years for IPTV subscribers. Michael Minges, TMG senior market analyst and lead author of the report said: “IPTV is revolutionizing the television market by introducing greater competition and providing consumers with a plethora of customizable content, viewable any time.”
Some other interesting points in the report include the finding that IPTV is successful in countries where pay television penetration is relatively low but broadband penetration is high. This characteristic is true especially in some countries of Europe where the number of IPTV subscribers is high. Other factors for this can be attributed to few regulatory obstacles, nationwide telecommunications operators and widely available broadband networks.
IPTV is making its presence felt in almost all the continents with Europe being the frontrunner with 5.3 million in 2007. Asia is the second best followed by in America with 3.3 and 1.3 million subscribers respectively.
France Telecom is the largest IPTV operator in the world with 1.1 million subscribers at the end of 2007. Verizon's (News - Alert) FiOS television service in the United States is the second best IPTV operator. With over 50 percent of its broadband subscribers using its "now" broadband TV service, Hong Kong's PCCW (News - Alert) has the most successful overall uptake.
Although, IPTV is successful in the high-economy countries, it is not limited to these areas. IPTV has its subscribers in China, India and in several countries in Africa. Further, according to TMG forecasts China and the United States will be the world’s largest IPTV markets by 2010.
The report comes as a great relief to operators, manufacturers, regulators, policymakers, researchers and others. The TMG report also includes penetration rates for television households, pay television households, broadband subscribers and broadband households apart from the annual historical data and a 2010 subscriber forecast for more than 40 countries at the beginning of 2008. in addition to this, the report also contains a listing of IPTV providers and pricing around the world.
