Report: IPTV Equipment Sales Will Grow 45 Percent

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributing Editor

According to the “Synergy (News - Alert) Q1 2008 IPTV Market Share” report from Synergy Research Group (SRG), the overall Internet protocol television equipment market is growing 45 percent year-to-year. The IPTV (News - Alert) Set Top Boxes (STB) is the fastest-growing IPTV market segment, at 86 percent per year.

IPTV equipment sales have seen an increase due to the upgrades to Carrier networks, especially at the Edge, according to Synergy. The research firm expects that over the next two years, IPTV subscribers will increase substantially worldwide. They predict that the number of these subscribers will reach near 40 million IPTV subscribers by 2010.

While IPTV deployments in China and South Korea are developing at an accelerated pace, Service Providers continue to heavily invest in IPTV deployments in Europe, according to Synergy.

Ray Mota, Ph.D., chief research officer at Synergy Research Group, said that IPTV has transitioned from a forward-thinking play to an essential strategy for Service Providers to counter competitive forces and pursue lucrative revenue opportunities. He said the trend translates into dollars spent on infrastructure equipment providing intelligence and service delivery.

The data from Synergy Research Group indicates that Cisco lea in Q1 2008 total IPTV equipment revenue rankings, followed by Motorola and Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert). There is an aggressive growth in router sales supporting IPTV equipment deployments, especially at the Edge and such investments are increasing the velocity of Carrier Ethernet deployments, according to Synergy.

Due to the reduced costs associated with Carrier Ethernet, there is a rise in Service Providers’ decisions to deliver IPTV using Carrier Ethernet at the Edge of their next-generation network.

The Q1 2008 carrier ethernet IPTV revenue rankings indicate that Cisco was at the top position. The Synergy Research Group has ranked Alcatel-Lucent at the second position and Juniper at the third. In Q1 2008 Juniper was at the top in IPTV BRAS, followed by Cisco and Ericsson (News - Alert). Motorola held the top spot for IPTV STBs, followed by Cisco.
