BLADE Debuts 10 GigE Network Virtualization Switch

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributing Editor

BLADE Network Technologies announced the introduction of 1/10 Gigabit Ethernet network virtualization switch for IBM (News - Alert) BladeCenter. BLADE Network Technologies specializes in network virtualization and high-performance solutions for servers and storage.

This new switch from BLADE is capable of using six 1-Gigabit copper and three 10 Gigabit SFP+ fiber uplinks at the same time offering 50 percent more bandwidth than other blade switch offerings.

The principle behind BLADE’s new switch is “Rackonomics” and “scale out” besides virtualization of data center networks. This brings down the total cost of ownership common in high-performance clusters and virtualized data enters. These need migration paths to the 10 Gigabit Ethernet which are affordable.

The BLADE 1/10Gb switch includes features such as lower power consumption (33 to 50 percent lower) than other blade switches. Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) and Border Gateway (News - Alert) Protocol (BGP) are built-in advanced features offered by layer 2/3 support at no extra cost. It also offers extensive network virtualization capabilities like VMReady.

“IBM continues to foster an ecosystem of industry-leading products around BladeCenter. With BLADE’s new 1/10 Gigabit Ethernet switch in the portfolio, BladeCenter customers have strong investment protection and a clear migration path as they transition to 10 Gigabit Ethernet,” said Alex Yost, IBM vice president and Business Line Executive for IBM BladeCenter.

“Customers are making the transition to 10 Gigabit Ethernet because it provides 10 times faster bandwidth, allowing them to transfer much more data. This better supports sharing multimedia files as well as virtualization, an important part of the new enterprise datacenter,” he added.

The BLADE 1/10Gb switch with Nortel (News - Alert)/BNT Extensions to IBM BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager I/O virtualization software enables the operation of multiple embedded blade server switches as a single large virtual switch by using stacking procedures. Stacking enables the easy combination of many switches as one logical unit.

Customers can benefit from advantages arising out of automated fail over or moves with no need for manual address re-assignment. This brings down the coordination required between server and network administrators.

Vikram Mehta, president and CEO of BLADE Network Technologies said, “Our Rackonomics approach means giving customers the option to affordably and easily implement both Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet as they scale out and virtualize their data center networks. We are pleased that IBM chose BLADE to provide IBM BladeCenter clients with active 1/10 Gigabit functionality.”
BLADE switch enables customers to build unified LAN and Ethernet-based storage like iSCSI or NAS offering flexibility with 1Gb and 10Gb ports. BLADE’s Nortel 1/10Gb Uplink Ethernet Switch Module on IBM BladeCenter offers advantages like low total cost of ownership for transitioning networks from 1Gigabit to 0 Gigabit Ethernet and Layer 3 features like OSPF and Routing Information Protocol (RIP). This suits applications needing high uplink bandwidth like IPTV (News - Alert), video surveillance, IP SAN storage, remote backup and disaster recovery.
