Union Communications, Pannaway to Develop FTTH, IPTV Platform

By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Pannaway (News - Alert) Networks today announced that Union Communications has selected its carrier grade, high-density Multi-Service Access Platform – the MAGNM-20.

Union Communications is a New Hampshire-based Independent Local Exchange Carrier reportedly serving 7,000 rural subscribers. The company says it’s implementing the MAGNM-20 for Active P2P FTTH as part of its existing copper network upgrade.

With this deployment, the company expects to give subscribers a “robust and reliable” access to high-bandwidth triple-play services including IPTV (News - Alert).

“I can easily see the need for a 30-Mbit broadband connection in the relatively near future as our subscribers begin to stream more video content off the Internet,” said Ron Troyer, plant manager at Union Communications.

He also said that Fiber-to-the-home is clearly the “best solution” for the current and future needs and Pannaway’s MAGNM-20 is the platform of choice. He added: “Our MAGNM-20 installed easily and has enabled us to see an immediate improvement in performance.”

“MAGNM-20 has the scalability we need for our larger exchanges, and can be managed and provisioned by Pannaway’s BAM, which is clearly the easiest and most intuitive broadband management system we’ve ever used,” Troyer said.

In a integrated system, MAGNM-20 scales to support a wide range of access technologies such as legacy T1 and POTS, ADSL2+, GPON, and Active Point-to-Point, Ethernet subscriber connections.

Moreover, MAGNM-20 is architected with a pure Ethernet/IP core and boasts 922 Gigabit per second backplane. Pannaway officials said that these attributes provide telcos like Union Communications with the “flexibility” to adapt to the evolving broadband services market.

“Innovators like Union Communications understand completely that video, gaming and music downloads are going to drive the need for a higher bandwidth services platform,” said Mark A. Carpenter, president at Pannaway Networks. “We’re pleased to be selected as Union Communications’ strategic partner for such an important initiative.”
