MRG Releases IPTV Infrastructure and Service Report
By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributing Editor
MRG’s latest IPTV
infrastructure and service report is designed to help operators achieve multi-platform IPTV (News - Alert) convergence smoothly and also compete with cable, satellite and Internet video providers.
The report categorizes multi-platform services into functional groups like time-shifting,
place-shifting, personalization and socialization. The report also gives several examples regarding new services and as to how they will look like on different platforms and regions of the world.
“The Millennial generation already expects video, personal communications and messaging services wherever they are, regardless of device or network,” said Steve Hawley, senior IPTV analyst at Multimedia Research Group, in a statement. “Operators that aren’t transforming their service platforms to serve these ‘digital natives’ are already at a disadvantage.”
The report features more than 180 companies and IPTV operators. Major operators featured in the report include Deutsche Telecom, PCCW, Orange and many others. The
vendors included are Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert), Cisco, IBM, HP, Integra5, NSN and Motorola besides others.
The report takes into account real-world examples. One example examines how theater tickets are bought using a home set-top box. The ticket gets transferred to a barcode on the consumer’s mobile phone. This is possible only when an operator controls both the platforms.
Gary Schultz, President of MRG, said, “The purpose of this report was to identify if, when and how IPTV Operators would move to advanced and converged (multi-platform) services, and measuring the use of IMS
and alternative technologies.”
He pointed out that in reality the interim steps to converged services like de-siloization and unification of elements of the back office were already becoming ways to decrease OpEx and improving customer loyalty. De-Siloization of services enables reduction in costs besides helps in foundation building.
The report clarifies regarding the gains achieved by Operators by adding QoS
and QoE components which will help Operators upgrade their infrastructure on a continuous basis. This is expected to increase customer satisfaction, revenue and customer retention. It also states that the proper use of Service Delivery Platforms (SDP), NGN (Next Generation Networks (News - Alert)) and IMS (IP
Multimedia Subsystems) will help Operators in the infrastructure upgrades at the same time minimizing CapEx.
