21ViaNet Selects On2 Codec for VOD Services

By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributor

21ViaNet reportedly said that it will be making use of On2 Technologies’ VP7 codec for its new VOD services.

On2 Technologies (News - Alert) creates advanced video compression technologies for desktop and wireless and helps in powering the video in many web and mobile applications and devices. 21ViaNet (News - Alert) is a carrier-neutral IDC service provider in China and its businesses include Internet Data Center service, Content Delivery Network, Enterprise Data Center service and Data Center-based industry solutions.

Officials at 21ViaNet say that their company has forged partnerships with Chinese telecom operators and service providers and they have now deployed On2 solutions in order to provide their customer base with value added services like video on demand. On2 Technologies’ VP7 video codec is a key component of its video distribution platform.

On2 says that its VP7 codec has better compression than other competitive codec such as MPEG-4 AVC and VC-1. The company’s video compression technology has low complexity and low CPU requirements on decode, are of very high quality providing fast encode and feature rich options. Customers get unique advantages like flexible data rate control, error resiliency and scalability and multi-platform optimizations with VP7.

As proprietary technology to On2, the video codec is patent pool free. This brings additional cost efficiency for publishing and distributing all kinds of content, as the video codec is not subject to MPEG-LA royalties.

On2 has said that if content providers aim to deliver video to the widest possible audience in the most affordable way, provide a niche solution for a few, or create a innovative new application or service, On2’s compression formats like the VP7 will provide them with the right foundation technology to maximize their success.

21ViaNet can offer additional value added options using this video codec to its customers which in turn will help increase traffic and broaden revenue streams for the service providers and operators. The company is currently developing another product that deploys On2 VP7 which it hopes will help promote sales of Internet video service enabled TV sets.
