Actiontec Electronics Selects CopperGate's HomePNA Chipsets
By Anil Sharma, TMCnet Contributing Editor
Actiontec Electronics, a developer of broadband connectivity and broadband-powered solutions, has selected CopperGate Communications’ HomePNA (News - Alert) chipsets for its newest product, the HomePNA Ethernet-to-Coax Network Adapter.
"Demand for HomePNA technology is booming because it reduces installation costs and time dramatically for IPTV (News - Alert) solutions," said Brian Henrichs, vice president of business development, Actiontec, in a statement.
Henrichs said that the company’s HomePNA adapters deliver all the bandwidth customers need, without having to install new wires. It is perfect for connecting an optical network terminal (ONT) to set-top boxes and home routers/gateways, he added.
Actiontec Electronics (News - Alert) officials said that Actiontec HomePNA Ethernet-to-coax Network Adapter connects standard Ethernet and coax cabling, to bring multimedia easily and cost-effectively to the home; it is especially suited for large rich media files like HDTV, video on demand, movies, music, and photos.
"In a competitive environment, it is important to give service providers more choices to implement robust home entertainment solutions," said William Simmelink, president of the HomePNA Alliance.
Simmelink said that “Actiontec's HomePNA adapter offers them the opportunity to use the technology that is already deployed successfully in well over a million homes."
HomePNA technology is rapidly becoming the IPTV standard for home entertainment networking with more than 40 service providers already standardizing on HomePNA. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU)-based standard delivers the best price-performance of any home networking technology and can reduce installation times by half.
CopperGate Communications claims that it is the only company whose standards-based chipsets enable carrier-class distribution of broadband digital content over all three types of existing wires in the home: coax, phone, and power.
The company sells its technology to OEMs who build solutions for multimedia home networking and multi-dwelling unit (MDU) broadband access markets. CopperGate's chips are used in set-top boxes, residential gateways, optical network terminators and Ethernet bridges deployed by four of the top five telcos in North America who are deploying IPTV.
In March Codetel, a telecommunications company in the Dominican Republic, had announced that it has selected CopperGate Communications' HomePNA 3.1 technology for its Claro (News - Alert) TV IPTV service.
Codetel offers local, long-distance, and wireless voice services, together with advanced data and video services.
