Ultra-High Definition TV Coming Soon?

By Divya Narain, TMCnet Contributor

As High-Definition TV (HDTV) continues to attract mainstream customers, the industry is trying to explore the possibilities of the commercialization of Ultra-High Definition (UHD), says market research firm In-Stat.

TMCnet recently reported that High-definition TV ownership now has reached 53 percent of total U.S. households, an 18 percentage point increase in ownership over 2008, when 35 percent of households reported owning an HDTV.

In-Stat (News - Alert) predicts that the UHD market will take a while to reach a critical mass of 5 percent household penetration. In-Stat also said that within five to ten years of the introduction of UHD, technology companies, manufacturers, service providers and media companies will have great latitude to test their marketing strategies.

"UHD formats provide between four and sixteen times the resolution of Blu-ray or 1080p high definition as well as 22.2 multichannel three-dimensional sound," said Michelle Abraham, In-Stat analyst, in a release. "This is a vast improvement over the currently available end user viewing experience in the home."

As originally proposed, UHD comes in two levels of resolution: 7680 x 4320 pixels (i.e., 8K resolution), and 3840 x 2160 (i.e., 4K resolution).

In-Stat has revealed the marketing strategy the UHD industry is going to adopt – UHD companies will leverage the increasing exposure of consumers to high resolution content to provide a digital cinema high resolution viewing experience in the home. Ultimately, broadcasters will start offering UHD content to an addressable market of UHDTVs, between 2017 and 2022.

In-Stat estimates the total installed base of UHDTVs in Europe at 5 percent household penetration until 2021 and at 28.2 percent penetration by 2025.

These findings were published in a study titled, "The Market Opportunity for Ultra-High Definition Video." The study covers the availability of ultra-high definition TV units and of ultra-high definition services around the world.

Scottsdale, AZ-based In-Stat is a strategic segment of the $9 billion Reed Elsevier (News - Alert) global information network. In-Stat’s market intelligence combines technical, market and end-user research and database models to analyze the Mobile Internet and Digital Entertainment ecosystems.
