By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributor

UTStarcom (News - Alert), an IP-based, end-to-end networking solutions and international service and support provider, has announced a new customer deployment with the Bureau of Radio and Television of Santai County, Sichuan Province, a subsidiary of Beijing-based government agency SARFT.

The company will help the client resume their radio and television network capability following 2008's tragic earthquake. UTStarcom will focus on earthquake-stricken areas in Sichuan province via its end-to-end RollingStream IPTV (News - Alert) platform.

This project will be divided into many phases and phase-I will provide 20,000 users with access to delivery channels, such as television and radio, for critical information. Once the project is completed, users will be able to access ongoing rich and colorful TV programs, as well as a broad platform for communication.

Peter Blackmore (News - Alert), UTStarcom's CEO and president said that their interactive IPTV technology uniquely positions them to support SARFT and help the local Sichuan province and other regions resume television and radio networks.

The IPTV RollingStream platform will enable transition from a simple, one-way network to a dual high-speed network and thus improve the technology and operation levels of Sichuan's radio and television sector.

Blackmore hopes to work together with SARFT and UTStarcom to make similar network enhancements in numerous other provinces.

The long-term goal of the project is to provide a benchmark of interactive multimedia services for radio and television content providers to develop their dual, broadband and multiple-services operations.

After the completion of this project, the residents of Santai County in the Sichuan province will be able to access rich television programming. The RollingStream platform will ensure the simultaneous launch of 7,000 video streams.

The deployment is scheduled to begin this month and the project will be carried out in every earthquake-hit area in the Sichuan province. The Bureau of Radio and Television of Santai County, Sichuan province reportedly is the project contractor.
