By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor
Harmonic Inc. announced that Kabelsignal has deployed its IP-based video processing solutions for its kabelDigitalTV service in Austria.
KabelSignal is a cable operator in Austria serving the regions of Lower Austria and Burgenland. The company launched the new service quickly owing to the integrated, easy-to-install solution and support services rendered by Harmonic (News - Alert) and its reseller partner Normann Engineering GmbH.
Harmonic company sources explained that its real-time IP distribution solution can increase capacity between headends and guarantees highly reliable service through redundant forward links and forward error correction or FEC transmission. The service is enabled by Harmonic's ProStream 1000 stream processing platform. Kabelsignal is also leveraging the Mentor re-encoding technology available on the ProStream 1000, and also the NSG 9000 universal edgeQAM and NMX Digital Service Manager for its broadcast digital service.
"The combination of Harmonic's technical expertise and reliable, high quality solutions made this installation for our kabelDigitalTV service a success," said Herbert Vögl, CTO at Kabelsignal. "The forward error correction capabilities available with the ProStream 1000 provide IP headend redundancy, giving us more flexibility, scalability and reliability, while lowering capital and operational expenses."
Robert Bammer, CEO at Kabelsignal said that Harmonic's technologies enable innovative and high quality services for cable operators, and that Kabelsignal was pleased to work with Harmonic on this project.
Harmonic's IP-based ProStream 1000 stream processing platform is used by Kabelsignal for multiplexing, scrambling and advanced processing of MPEG streams, including redundant forward error correction transmission. The NSG 9000 platform has been engineered for scalability and performance. Also it provides Kabelsignal with an integrated digital video gateway that multiplexes broadcast content streamed over the IP network.
Officials at Harmonic emphasized that the NMX Digital Service Manager provides a powerful set of tools which help in configuring, monitoring and managing all the compressed digital video and audio services.
Ian Graham, Vice President of Europe and Middle East Sales for Harmonic Inc. said that Harmonic specializes in edgeQAM deployments. It is powering over 7 million VOD streams worldwide, and supporting broadcast, switched digital, modular CMTS and cable IPTV (News - Alert) services with the NSG 9000. He added that the ProStream 1000 is a highly flexible solution and is suitable for various stream processing needs like transcoding, multiplexing, scrambling, FEC and others.
