Fully Automated Test Solution for HDMI 1.4 CTS Introduced by Tektronix

By Carolyn J Dawson, TMCnet Contributor

Tektronix (News - Alert), a supplier of test, measurement and monitoring instrumentation systems, has launched the first completely automated compliance test solution based on Direct Synthesis and targeted specifically at the nascent High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) 1.4 CTS (News - Alert) specification. The latest launch incorporates the Tektronix AWG7000B Series Arbitrary Waveform Generator with Direct Synthesis -- and has been certified by the HDMI Standards Organization to be suitable for use with the HDMI Compliance Test Specification (CTS) 1.4.

HDMI 1.4 was launched during June, 2009. It brought about improvements like a new Ethernet and audio return channel-HEAC, Automated HDMI-Type E, Mobile HDMI-Type D, support for 3D over HDMI, HDMI support for 4K x 2K resolutions and new colorimetry designs. With these new features there was a need for further compliance and testing in order to check for total interoperability. All fully compliant products must conform to HDMI CTS 1.4.

In a release, Dave Slack, marketing manager, technology solutions group, Tektronix, said “By being first to market with a full HDMI CTS 1.4 solution, we are helping the industry to bring HDMI 1.4 compliant devices to market in less time while also improving the efficiency of HDMI engineers and designers with faster validation cycles and higher reliability."

The Panasonic (News - Alert) Authorized Testing Center (ATC) has already announced that it would be employing the HDMI CTS 1.4 offering from Tektronix for its own HDMI compliance testing. They expect that this would render the process more labor efficient and reduce errors, leading to quicker time to market for HDMI 1.4 compliant appliances. Several other consumer electronics manufacturers have also expressed a similar interest in the product.

By using the AWG7000B Series Arbitrary Waveform Generator with direct synthesis, Tektronix is able to deliver dependable HDMI CTS 1.4 compliance testing and eliminates non-linearities in test setup for source, sink and cable tests. Use of direct synthesis helps designers be independent of hardware Cable emulators, hardware TTC filters or PCB for jitter component insertion or signal combiners, all of which would bring down the efficiency of the testing process. Tektronix is the only company to offer a direct synthesis bases testing solution. The AWG7000B Series can also quickly transmit all the necessary signals replete with controllable jitter, noise and other signal difficulties.

Tektronix fully supports a physical layer testing for source, sink and cable devices with its range of extensive testing tools and processes intended for HDMI compliance testing. These include the HDMI compliance test software, DPO7000 & DPO/DSA7000B series real time oscilloscopes and the DSA8200 sampling oscilloscopes and test fixtures, including HEAC and Types D & E, among others. The latest solution will be made available for order or download from mid November 2009.
